The Wooden Star
On a snowy winter night, the village of Pine Hollow was blanketed in a thick layer of snow. The streets were quiet, and the only sound was the soft crunch of boots on snow as families hurried home to warm fires and cosy blankets. In a small house at the edge of the village, a little girl named Ava was playing in her backyard, her breath forming little clouds in the cold air.
Ava loved the snow. She loved how it sparkled in the moonlight and how it made everything feel magical. As she built a snowman, her mittens damp and her cheeks rosy, she noticed something glinting in the snow. Curious, she brushed away the snow and found a wooden star, half-buried and worn with age.
The star was simple but beautiful, with smooth edges and a faint pattern of tiny flowers carved into its surface. Ava picked it up and held it in her hands, feeling its warmth despite the cold. It felt special, as if it had been waiting just for her.
Ava’s mind raced with ideas. She thought of her neighbour, Mr. Tom, an elderly man who lived alone and often sat by his window, staring out at the snow. Mr. Tom had been quiet lately, and Ava’s mum had mentioned that he missed his family, who lived far away.
“Maybe this star can cheer him up,” Ava thought.
The next morning, Ava wrapped the wooden star in a piece of soft cloth and tied it with a ribbon. She knocked on Mr. Tom’s door, her heart pounding with excitement. When he opened the door, his face lit up with surprise.
“Ava! What brings you here on this cold morning?” he asked, his voice warm and kind.
“I found something special, and I thought you might like it,” Ava said, holding out the wrapped star.
Mr. Tom unwrapped it slowly, his hands trembling slightly. When he saw the wooden star, his eyes filled with tears. “Oh, Ava,” he whispered, holding it up to the light. “This is beautiful.”
He traced the carved flowers with his finger, a smile spreading across his face. “This reminds me of the stars my wife and I used to watch together,” he said, his voice choked with emotion. “She loved the night sky.”
Ava’s heart swelled with happiness. She hadn’t known about Mr. Tom’s wife, but she was glad the star could bring back happy memories.
Mr. Tom hung the star on his tree, where it twinkled in the light, reminding him of the love he had in his life. From that day on, he smiled more often, and Ava learned that even the simplest gifts could bring comfort and joy.
